So, Why did Itachi Join Akatsuki?
Now that Itachi had killed his clan, he was branded a traitor. He could no longer stay in Konoha, hence he left the village to join the Akatsuki.
Itachi joined Akatsuki for just one reason, guess what? The Akatsuki was a group of highly skilled rogue ninjas, with most of them being wanted in all the the five countries.
Itachi knew the danger that these ninjas possessed, hence he joined the Akatsuki to spy on them while keeping a close tab on Sasuke. He along with Hoshigaki Kisame formed a deadly pair who could take on almost any kage level shinobi.
